Beyond flatness 1

  • Some words only exist in particular languages and cultures that are hard to translate accurately into others. For example, traditional poems written in ancient Chinese can not be translated precisely into English. Even though the translated version is close enough to convey the poet’s intention, they are never the same in language rhythm, pattern, and format. The understanding of certain words and phrases is also distinct between individuals, and so do the mediums in charge of transmitting the information. What will happen if we move our focus on language to another expression form, for example, an image? Will people understand each other better?

This project tackles issues in the way people communicate with each other, using encoded images as the benchmark to examine whether the creator and the receiver of the encrypted image will perceive the same message from the same source. I programmed a tool for generating encoded images and providing point to point transitions between both ends of the users. The users can only get access to decode the message with the picture in hand and an exclusive string code to parse the picture.
